WoodCFD

Objectives

Development of clean and efficient wood stoves through improved batch combustion models and CFD modelling approaches through:

  • Model development: improved transient wood log and gas release models, transient heat transfer and storage models, reduced kinetics models (NOx and soot), and transient models and approaches for heat distribution in the building; and verification of these.
  • Simulations: transient and stationary CFD simulations of wood stoves, and room and building integration simulations; and verification of these.

Fundamental modelling & model development - SP1
The major objective of SP1 is to develop improved sub models to be included in the CFD simulations in SP2.

  • WP1.1 Wood log & gas release models
Objective: Develop improved transient models for the batch combustion process – modelling the transient behavior of wood log decomposition including gas release/production and char conversion at various operating conditions.
  • WP1.2 Reduced kinetics models (NOx & soot)
Objective: Develop improved reduced kinetics models, including NOx and soot, suitable for biomass combustion. Models at correct level of detail for transient and stationary simulations respectively.
  • WP1.3 Heat transfer models
Objective: Develop improved transient heat transfer models for the heat transfer and heat storage in composite wood stove walls for various operating conditions and material configurations, including the use of phase change materials.

Wood stove CFD simulations and verification - SP2
The major objectives of SP2 are to develop a numerical tool that is suitable to study concept improvements for wood stoves and to recommend new improved concepts with respect to high energy efficiency and low emissions based on simulation results.

  • Development of base cases - WP2.1
Objective: Develop base cases for transient and stationary simulations to be used in WP2.2 and WP2.3. The transient behaviour of wood combustion in wood stoves with different design will be studied with transient CFD simulations, while stationary CFD simulations, allowing for a higher level of detail, will be used for detailed studies of specific phenomena at selected instances in the wood combustion cycle.
  • Transient CFD simulations - WP2.2
Objective: Study the transient behaviour of wood combustion in wood stoves with different design, and identify critical instances in the transient cycle that will be used as input to the stationary simulations (WP2.3).
  • Stationary CFD simulations - WP2.3
Objective: Study the effect of operational changes and design parameters on energy efficiency and emissions at specific/selected instances during the wood combustion cycle. Investigate optimization strategies with respect to energy efficiency and emission levels. Provide recommendations for improved concepts based on simulation results.
  • Experiments for verification - WP2.4
Objective: Provide experimental data needed for verification of modelling work.

Heat distribution modelling in the building/room - SP3
The major objectives of SP3 are to develop improved transient heat distribution models – giving reliable prediction of the effect of various heat transfer concepts in buildings and providing design guidelines for optimum wood stoves for tomorrows (energy efficient) buildings

  • Heat release modelling - WP3.1
Objective: Heat release modelling by simulating the transient heat transfer through the composite stove walls, including storage in PCM material. Different stove designs and thermal inertias will be compared.
  • Heat distribution approaches - WP3.2
Objective: Heat distribution modelling in the room where the stove is placed and heat transfer options to move heat to the rest of the building. Detailed modelling with CFD to assess the thermal comfort of the user for different stove designs and room configurations.
  • Building integration modelling - WP3.3
Objective: Heat distribution modelling in a complete building, to assess the thermal comfort for a range of different building configurations. TRNSYS modelling coupled to CFD modelling for selected cases for detailed studies.

Education and training - SP4
The major objective of SP4 is to strengthen the education within this field through MSc and PhD students. The objective is also to increase the competence level in the industry. The long-term goal is competence building and strengthening of the education within combustion of wood in wood stoves and fireplaces.

  • Education - WP4.1
Objective: Education of highly skilled candidates within this area. PhD and Master students.
  • Industrial seminars - WP4.2
    Objective: Training of industry partners.

Technology monitoring and dissemination - SP5
The major objectives of SP5 are to monitor the latest research and technological developments and to disseminate research results.

  • Technology monitoring - WP5.1
Objective: Monitoring of activities and state-of-the-art within this area.
  • Dissemination - WP5.2
Objective: Dissemination of knowledge to the industry partners, and other interested parties when applicable.
