WP5 Post-capture CO2 management

The objective for WP5 is to compile and evaluate existing post-capture CO2 management options. Transport and storage as well as utilisation of CO2 in products will be studied taking into account the perspective of the cement industry.

The following three types of options will be assessed:

CO2-to-transport/storage/EOR grid, with specific reference to the latest CO2 purity standards and a source-sink mapping for cement plants within Europe;

CO2-to-products, with specific reference to organic products (e.g. power to X options), their marketability, life time (element of storage), and integrability of their production and/or use within the cement industry;

CO2-to-carbonates by mineralisation, with specific reference to the source materials (including the availability and carbonation potential of cement production/concrete recycling residues), the mineralisation routes (technology, cost, CO2 efficiency), the integrability of these routes and/or the use of the mineralisation products within the cement production process. This class of options is of relevance from the cement industry's perspective, given the similarities between the mineralisation and the cement production technology in terms of processing (mechanical and thermal) and materials (carbonates and silicates).

The research is being completed first through a thorough literature review followed by economic assessments and discussions with the CEMCAP consortium. Various CO2 sequestration/utilization options will be compared with the goal of providing guidelines and recommendations to the cement industry on how to best manage captured CO2. With the cooperation of partners directly involved in the cement industry, key insights can be provided which make the results of this study especially relevant.

The project partners involved in WP5 are TNO, ETH and VDZ.
