Publications
MRST has been used in a large number of journal articles, conference proceedings, and master and doctoral theses. We try to collect as many as possible of these publications and have compiled them in separate lists, which you can find in the menu to the right. If you are using MRST in any publication, we would be grateful if you cite the MRST book or one of the three key papers listed below. You could also refer to this webpage.

MRST books

K.-A. Lie. An Introduction to Reservoir Simulation Using MATLAB/GNU Octave: User Guide to the MATLAB Reservoir Simulation Toolbox (MRST), Cambridge University Press, 2019, ISBN 9781108492430.
URL: www.cambridge.org/9781108492430
DOI: 10.1017/9781108591416
Open access to electronic version funded by Equinor

The MRST book is the primary resource to learn about MRST and the various models, solvers, and workflow tools that are implemented in the software. Complete scripts and functions necessary to reproduce most of the examples can be found in the 'book' module of the official MRST release. These scripts will be updated and kept in sync with the latest release of the software.

Notice, however, that the book does not document all the advanced functionality that can be found in various add-on modules, such as compositional simulation, discrete and embedded fracture models, dual-porosity models, geomechanics, and multiscale methods.

Advanced Modelling with the MATLAB Reservoir Simulation Toolbox. Edited by K.-A. Lie and O. Møyner. Cambridge University Press, September 2021, ISBN 9781009019781.
Open access to electronic version funded by VISTA.

Many leading experts contribute to this follow-up, which introduces more advanced functionality in MRST. It is, however, a self-contained introduction to a variety of modern numerical methods for simulating multiphase flow in porous media, with applications to geothermal energy, chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR), flow in fractured and unconventional reservoirs, and in the unsaturated zone. The reader will learn how to implement new models and algorithms in a robust, efficient manner. A large number of numerical examples are included, all fully equipped with code and data so that the reader can reproduce the results and use them as a starting point for their own work. Like the original textbook, this book will prove invaluable for researchers, professionals and advanced students using reservoir simulation methods.

Is your paper missing?

If your paper is missing in the lists, if have you used MRST in your thesis, or if have you supervised students using MRST, we are of course very happy to hear about it. If you provide us with publication details, we will list your publication or details about the thesis. If you also provide us with an illustrateive picture and a short description, we will highlight your work on our gallery pages. Contact:
