A Systematic Mapping Study of Deployment and Orchestration Approaches for IoT

Sammendrag

Internet of Things (IoT) systems are typically distributed and perform coordinated behavior across IoT, edge
and cloud infrastructures. Because of the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of these infrastructures, the IoT
is challenging state of the art approaches for the deployment and orchestration of software systems. We need
a clear picture of the research landscape of the existing deployment and orchestration approaches for IoT
(DEPO4IOT). Such a picture can show us how advanced the current state of the art is and what are the gaps to
address. We conducted a systematic mapping study (SMS) to find out the research landscape in this area. The
results of our SMS show the overall status of the key artifacts of DEPO4IOT. Among the results, we found a
sharp increase in the number of primary DEPO4IOT publications in two recent years. We also found that most
approaches do not really support the deployment or orchestration at low-level IoT devices. Meanwhile, there
is a lack of addressing the trustworthy aspects and advanced supports in the existing DEPO4IOT approaches.
Finally, we point out the current open issues in this research area and suggest potential research directions to
tackle these issues.
