How mobile media impacts urban life: blending social cohesion and social distancing

Sammendrag

Wireless mobile media are diffusing faster than any other technology, also in the time of emergency such as corona. These mobile media are not only changing people's lives, but also the broader social context and social cohesion in urban life. With corona we are also physically restricted in so many ways with enforced social distancing as part of an emergency intervention minimizing exposure to infected individuals.
Even before the corona crises most of us was dependent up on mobile devices to keep in touch. And in even in public spaces many of us, having a cell phone in hand and AirPods in ears is the default mode while walking the streets or when taking the subway. Such mobile habits mean much less chance of bumping into others and having a conversation with the fellow residents who populate our real lives. On the other hand, the transition to real-life social distancing intervention are maybe less altering to our status quo mobile mediated situation.
