Coordinated voltage control in the distribution grid - Literature and simulation study of possibilities and challenges related to coordinated voltage control in the distribution grid

Sammendrag

This report is written as a part of the SAMREG project, which is a research project funded by Norwegian distribution system operators (DSOs). The project aims to help grid companies adopting voltage regulation as an alternative to grid investment to reduce the investment need in the distribution grid. This report aims to demonstrate the importance of evaluating the dimensioning, localization and choice of controller settings in voltage regulators to achieve the optimal coordination of multiple voltage regulators.
The concept of coordinated voltage control (CVC) is explained, and examples from the literature where CVC is implemented in real distribution networks are presented. The
report presents methodology and results from load flow simulation studies that have been conducted for two real network cases from the participating DSOs. The simulation
studies are simplified load flow simulations with 1‐minute time resolution. The two network cases are modelled, simulated and assessed for different scenarios, where
different voltage regulators and regulation modes/strategies are implemented in the grid.
