Proceedings Workshop Ice Abrasion on concrete structures

Sammendrag

Nordic Concrete Research Workshop on Ice abrasion of concrete structures.

There is increasing interest in developing ice abrasion resistant concrete structures for the arctic. Some relevant research in the field between concrete- and ice science was presented and discussed in a workshop arranged in Finland October 25th – 26th 2007 to proceed in the development of ice abrasion resistant concrete structures. The Nordic Concrete Research workshop was held at Aker Arctic, Vuosaari, and at Helsinki University of Technology, TKK, Espoo, Finland. Thanks to managing Director Mikko Niini and Boel Dondysh at Aker Arctic for their hospitality during the first one and a half day in Vuosaari and to Professor Vesa Penttala and Mr Esko Sistonen for hosting the last part of the workshop in Espoo. Thanks also to the Norwegian Research Council, Aker Solutions/Jan-Diederik Advocaat and the COncrete INnovation centre (COIN) at Sintef/NTNU in Trondheim for support.

SEPPO HUOVINEN

This publication is dedicated to late professor Seppo Huovinen who passed away the sixth of February 2008 after a longer period of illness. Seppo was the first real pioneer within the research area of ice abrasion on concrete structures. He did seminal research in his dissertation 'Abrasion of Concrete by Ice in arctic Sea Structures'. Seppo's knowledge was not just limited to the research during his doctoral thesis. He held key qualifications within design of reinforced concrete structures, service life, durability, life cycle analysis, repair and maintenance techniques and structural mechanics. Seppo had a significant, scientific career within three different areas. He worked as a bridge designer in the engineering office Pontek Oy (Ltd.), Helsinki, 1973 - 1980. Between 1980 – 1994 he worked as a researcher at the Technical Research Centre of Finland, VTT, Espoo. Last he worked as a professor at the Structural engineering and Building Physics Laboratory at Helsinki University of Technology, TKK, Espoo, 1994-2008.

With respect to Seppo's memory,
