Paper microfluidics

Sammendrag

Paper microfluidics play an increasing role in biomedical research. This interest is attributed to the technological simplicity, the considerably lower costs compared to other fabrication approaches, as well as good compatibility with many bioanalytical procedures. A paper-based analytical device can be developed and modified relatively fast; its fabrication typically does not require any sophisticated facilities and highly skilled personnel. Therefore, paper microfluidics can be well applicable in resource-limited settings, complementing and, in some cases, even replacing the traditional bioanalytical tools. This chapter presents a short overview of the progress made by paper microfluidics in recent years, reviews the basic design and operational principles as well as discusses the application areas of paper-based devices
