Chapter 14 – Human Reliability Analysis: From the Nuclear to the Petroleum Sector

Sammendrag

This chapter presents an overview of human reliability analysis (HRA) methods to highlight differences and complementarities for potential industrial applications. Origins of HRA as a purely quantitative discipline are first discussed. The chapter then addresses the second generation of methods, developed for deeper integration with risk analyses. The description of representative HRA methods is combined with their different application areas, from the nuclear to the petroleum sector. In particular, the fundamental importance of human factors in oil and gas major accidents is acknowledged. For this reason, the study introduces a largely used quantitative technique (standardized plant analysis risk with human reliability analysis) and the related project aimed at its adaptation to the petroleum sector.
