An innovative and cost-effective solution for reducing road safety risks related to heavy goods vehicles

Sammendrag

An intelligent transport system application ('NonStop') for automatic selection of control candidates for heavy vehicles inspection are being developed, demonstrated and evaluated in a research project funded by the Research Council of Norway and conducted in collaboration between the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and SINTEF.
A targeted selection of vehicles for inspection will make it possible to focus time and effort on potential violators; resulting in more efficient control activities, decreased delay for reliable transport companies and drivers, increased road traffic safety and more equal competitive terms for the transport industry.
A user requirement study amongst stakeholders in the Norwegian transport industry reveals a present need of efficiency improvement in the control of heavy goods vehicles, as the random control activities of today are in favour of non-reliable transport companies. The NonStop system is very promising in meeting the needs and demand from the transport sector, bringing about high expectations of positive impacts for drivers as well as transport operators. Outcome and impacts for enforcement authorities, transport industry and society will be addressed in an on-going evaluation assessment.
