Value creation
The main economic value of using SHARM comes from improved decision support regarding at what hours and from which units to generate, given the total picture of uncertainty in short-term inflow and prices with wind and solar impact.

Using SHARM means higher income for the companies compared to rule based or deterministic approaches. The importance of a stochastic model for decision support in different energy and system service markets grows as Europe turns from electricity generated from fossil fuels to electricity generation from intermittent renewable energy sources.

Testing and improving SHARM will give additional and new understanding of how hydropower on a detailed level can be used to balance intermittent energy sources, and how hydropower may be used in the future. We expect to gain experience regarding possible barriers to the utilization of balancing services from hydropower.
