This research area applies usecase development methodology and the National Smart Grid Laboratory to develop and test a set of new distribution network monitoring and operation concepts.

The benefits and requirements for secure utilization of new communication technologies are also studied. These technologies aim to exploit extensive real-time monitoring of distribution networks and the activation of available flexibility resources.

DSOs and TSOs must adapt new ICT solutions to coordinate the activation of flexibility resources as well as to deploy new monitoring and protection concepts. The impact of these results is a more flexible operation of the distribution grid. This will in turn contribute to cost reductions, enhanced renewable integration potential, and improved system reliability and security, as well as standardised solutions.
