Shale rock physics

In order to interpret correctly seismic data, it is crucial to understand how the rocks located above petroleum reservoirs (typically shales) affect the measurements. SINTEF has unique competence in understanding the dependency of seismic velocities on rock parameters such as deformation, strain, temperature and frequency.

The Formation Physics department has developed unique competence regarding understanding the links between ultrasonic velocities and stress and deformation states in anisotropic, low permeability rocks. New models are developed, taking into account special features such as the presence of bound water on clay platelets. We are specially interested on the effect of anisotropy on dispersion and attenuation of seismic waves. This is studied in the laboratory with a unique newly developed low frequency rig. Important research topics are:

  • Triaxial stress and pore pressure sensitivity of ultrasonic velocities
  • Anisotropy and attenuation
  • Seismic frequency velocity and attenuation measurements
  • Temperature effect and thermal stresses
