Noise surveys at five Norwegian airports

Abstract

A noise survey has been conducted at five Norwegian airports. The two standard questions recommended by ICBEN were included in the questionnaire, and both the verbal and the numerical ICBEN response scales were used. The results were analyzed according to the CTL-method, which provides at convenient way of doing cross-survey comparisons. The five airports were classified as "high rate of change" (HRC) and "low rate of change" (LRC) according to the definition proposed by Jansen and Guski. The prevalence of annoyance at the four LRC airports was much smaller than what is predicted by the EU-recommended dose-response curve. For a given annoyance response, the residents living around these airports tolerate 7-10 dB higher noise levels than the EU average. Residents near the HRC airport were more annoyed than the average, equivalent to a shift of about 5 dB compared to the EU-curve. However, they tolerate about 3 dB higher noise levels than the average HRC resident as found from an analysis of internationally available survey results.
