Corrosion protecting coating systems in Arctic areas

Abstract

Summary Various properties of five protective coating systems have been investigated under arctic conditions. Arctic conditions have been defined as temperatures down to  60°C. Ageing resistance testing according to ISO 20340 with -60°C in the freezer instead of the specified -20°C showed acceptable performance for several of the tested samples. The reinforced polyester coating system was highly resistant towards corrosion creep. The vulcanized rubber coating and a conventional three-coat paint system showed good performance with respect to rust creep. However, the polysiloxane topcoat cracked during testing. The coating system with the polysiloxane topcoat also showed cracking in different mechanical tests and failed in several of the impact resistance test. Generally, mechanical testing at or below -30°C showed harder and less flexible/more brittle coatings.
