Integration of market and network models for security of electricity supply analysis

Abstract

This report presents a framework and integrated methodology (SAMREL) incorporating power market analysis via power flow and contingency analysis to delivery point reliability analysis. Integration of the market and network models provides a comprehensive and consistent methodology that can be utilized for assessment of the security of electricity supply and to quantify the societal impacts in terms of high energy prices, risk of load curtailment and customer interruption costs. Such integrated methodology will improve both the market simulations and the reliability assessment through a better information exchange and interaction between the different parts of the chain and more consistent input to the various analyses. The integration of models is made possible through the choice of a modular structure and a definition of the interfaces and needs for information exchange between the different modules. The SAMREL methodology is applicable for a range of applications: Power market analysis, power system simulations, assessment of marginal costs of losses, power system security and reliability analysis, interruption cost assessment, transmission system planning etc. These types of analyses are demanded by transmission system operators (TSOs), authorities, regional grid utilities, power producers and large industrial companies. They are used in long term planning, operational planning, online operation and security of supply assessment.
