Solvent degradation testing in post combustion CO2 capture. The importance of fundamental knowledge and test strategies.

Abstract

In post-combustion CO2 capture solvent degradation may cause significant problems and extra cost (reduced performance, corrosion, solvent losses, increased emissions etc.). This webinar addresses the importance of fundamental knowledge of reaction mechanism and factors influencing the stability of solvents as well as good strategy for laboratory tests. For laboratory test it is important to validate that lab scale results are relevant for degradation occurring in a real process environment. As examples comparison of observed degradation from campaigns with ethanolamine (MEA) as solvent in SINTEF'S solvent degradation rig (SDR) as well as some data from pilot campaigns will be included. Fundamental understanding and good test protocols are essential in the selecting of solvents but also in the monitoring of processes and in choosing mitigation actions.
