NCS C+ – The Norwegian Continental Shelf: A Driver for Climate-Positive Norway

NCS C+ aims to develop four climate-positive technologies that will help increase the pace of the green transition and remove large volumes of carbon dioxide and methane from the atmosphere.

The removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere has been highlighted as a critical component of almost every path to achieving the goals set by the Paris Agreement, namely to limit an increase in global temperatures to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

In order to support Norway and Europe’s climate-neutrality ambitions, NCS C+ will develop and mature four climate-positive technologies that will focus on removing large volumes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane from the atmosphere.

These four technologies are:

  1. Converting algae and/or waste bio-resources into hydrogen and/or heat with CCS,
  2. Removing CO2 from seawater,
  3. Removing CO2 from the air (often referred to as DAC), and
  4. Removing methane from the air.

The scientific results of NCS C+ will potentially contribute to increasing the momentum in Norway and Europe for carbon capture and storage (CCS), and provide the necessary context for climate-positive solutions. NCS C+ will create alternative paths that leverage CCS infrastructure in order to increase the reach of cost-effective, climate-positive value chains.

As a result, NCS C+ will help advance the pace of the green transition and change to a net-zero economy, as well as shift the existing atmospheric greenhouse gas levels.

This project is associated with the Green Platform project “Carbon Links” (LINCCS). LINCCS aims to be a key driver of the green transition by uniting industrial actors working on the Norwegian Continental Shelf with the common goal of increasing the pace of CCS uptake, unlocking considerable investment potential, and making a positive impact on the environment.
