SINTEF ACE is a full-scale laboratory facility designed to develop and test new aquaculture technologies. Facility users are researchers and others conducting practical experiments and tests both under optimally controlled and realistic conditions.
SINTEF's labs cover a large variety of fields in acoustics, including noise, hearing, building acoustics, underwater acoustics, and auralisation.
Advanced materials characterisation - Laboratory
The advanced materials characterization laboratory in Oslo develops techniques and makes use of advanced experimental facilities within the national infrastructure centers NORTEM, NICE, and NORFAB. It also employs modeling frameworks utilizing the supercomputer infrastructure in SIGMA2, as well as fundamental materials competence. This combined approach allows for determination of structure, chemistry and materials response from the atomic to millimeter scale.
The cavitation tunnel is used to investigate the hydrodynamic performance of different type of ship hulls, propulsors and other hydrodynamic objects. Propeller induced pressure fluctuations and noise as well as cavitation are investigated by means of measurements and high speed video observation. Propeller shaft and single propeller blade forces and moments can be measured using advanced in-house developed miniaturized instrumentation, in addition to standard thrust and torque measurements.
In the characterization laboratory we have strong expertise in metallographic characterization of steel, aluminum and other metals and alloys. The laboratory is located very close to the mechanical/fracture mechanical laboratory, the corrosion laboratory (CorLab), the welding laboratory and the workshop.
Circulating Water Tunnel
The new Circulating Water Tunnel (CWT) is a test facility dedicated to optical measurement techniques and flow visualization. The tank's measurement section is completely transparent and can be operated either with a free surface or the lid closed.
