Hello everybody! I am Martin, 22 and I am a French student coming from Mines Saint Etienne, which is a Graduate Institute of Science and Technology, member of Institut Mines-Télécom and ranked among the top 15 engineering school in France.
Gunnar Sande - new PhD candidate in the ROP project
My name is Gunnar Sande, and I am a PhD student in the ROP project. For my thesis, I will focus on experimental work and the technical challenges related to the hyperbaric welding method.
The challenge of joining pipelines at the sea bed
The most critical part of the technology for remotely controlled subsea pipeline repair is the welding operation. To produce high quality multi-pass butt welds at sea depths down to 1000 meter and beyond challenges the welding process and the overall control. One of the main challenges is the welding of the first full penetration root pass between two pipe ends with varying fit-ups, without any internal weld pool support. To develop a welding technology handling this challenge with robustness for both C-Mn and clad pipes is a major objective of the ROP project.

Through-process modelling of hyperbaric welding
The mystery of hydrogen embrittlement in welding is expected to be solved through an integrated understanding of arc physics, molten pool flow behaviour as well as thermo-mechanical modelling of weld joint properties.
