The challenge of joining pipelines at the sea bed
The most critical part of the technology for remotely controlled subsea pipeline repair is the welding operation. To produce high quality multi-pass butt welds at sea depths down to 1000 meter and beyond challenges the welding process and the overall control. One of the main challenges is the welding of the first full penetration root pass between two pipe ends with varying fit-ups, without any internal weld pool support. To develop a welding technology handling this challenge with robustness for both C-Mn and clad pipes is a major objective of the ROP project.
