Metallographic characterization laboratory
In the characterization laboratory we have strong expertise in metallographic characterization of steel, aluminum and other metals and alloys. The laboratory is located very close to the mechanical/fracture mechanical laboratory, the corrosion laboratory (CorLab), the welding laboratory and the workshop.
Molecular biology laboratory
We have state of the art equipment for molecular biology, including an Illumina MiSeq sequencer, droplet digital PCR (ddPCR), Agilent Bioanalyzer, CHEF Mapper XA pulse field gel electrophoresis system and a Bluepippin cassette-based gel electrophoresis system for DNA and protein separation, in addition to ÄKTA FPLC equipment for protein purification. Our co-workers have several years of experience and master most topics and protocols related to genetic modification of bacteria.
Molten Salt and Electrolysis Lab
Molten salts includes fluorides, chlorides and carbonates melts for use in several electrochemical processes. Aluminium electrolysis is the predominant field of work but also electrowinning of Titanium, Iron, Magnesium, Silicon and Rare Earth Metals (REM) covers our research activities. Recently our research activity also cover recycling and electro refining of critical materials (REE elements mainly). Liquid metal battery for future storage of renewable energy is another field of research.
Process Metallurgical Laboratories
Modern production of high quality metallic materials requires advanced knowledge of pyro-metallurgical processes. SINTEF optimises metallurgical processes and raw materials, using a combination of laboratory scale and pilot scale experimental techniques, combined with thermochemical modelling.
Refractories and Carbon Test Laboratories
High temperature materials are commonly defined based on their maximum application temperature with respect to the materials melting temperature, which strongly depends on the applied stress-level and the resistance to corrosive environments. Our expertise cover in special refractories, linings and carbon based materials for the primary aluminium cells, cast furnaces, anode baking furnaces, waste incinerators, silicon – and ferro-alloy reduction process.
Thermal-mechanical simulation laboratory
Our Thermal-Mechanical Simulation laboratory offers state of the art technology for experimental and thermal-mechanical testing of metallic samples. The physical simulation system provides desired versatility and capacity to simulate thermal, mechanical and environmental stresses that industrial applications may get exposed to.
