Smart Grids / Smart Grid operation

Smart Grids / Smart Grid operation

The energy system of the future will incorporate higher levels of production from renewable sources and greater consumer flexibility. It must also be robust and reliable. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be used extensively to monitor, regulate and automate the grid.

Electricity will flow both to and from consumers and local producers. The increased use of ICT will enable us to develop 'intelligent' grids in which consumers will be actively involved in the operation of the power system. The use of Smart Grid technologies is especially relevant for grid infrastructures located close to the end-user. Central and regional grids, operating at higher voltages, are to a large extent already operating in 'smart' mode.
