Through the European Green Deal, the EU has set the ambitious goal of achieving climate-neutral societies by 2050. While the transport sector in general has started the transition to emission-free alternatives, the aviation sector appears to be one of the most difficult to decarbonise, due to a combination of weight and volume limitations, energy density, safety and technology certification requirements. Simultaneously, it is also responsible for a significant amount of the sector’s emissions. In 2019, aviation was responsible for 5% of Norway’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and 2.5% of global emissions. However, CO2 only accounts for 1/3 of the impact on climate from air travel, with emissions such as contrails and nitrogen (NOX) causing the remaining 2/3.
If we are to meet the EU’s targets, a massive restructuring of both aircraft technology and infrastructures is necessary.
The Green Aviation Gemini Centre invites anyone interested in these challenges to the first of its Green Aviation Talks. The event will be held online on 25 August 2022 from 13:30 to 15:00, with speakers:
- Ida Hjorth, Research Manager at SINTEF Energy Research,
- Jonas Kristiansen Nøland, Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Power Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and
- Christian Hartmann, Chief Scientist at the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE).

This is exactly the focus of the TULIPS (DemonsTrating lower pollUting soLutions for sustaInable airPorts acrosS Europe) project. The project features a consortium of 29 partners from airports, airlines, research institutions and industry partners.
