Objectives and General Description

The manufacturing industry is a key industry. Within this industry challenging activities influencing competitiveness are connected to radical new way of operation (digital business) and to new products (extended products)

Traditional engineering curricula to limited extend reflects the real needs of the industry that faces problems of integrative nature across the traditional disciplines, such as.

  • Working with digital tools for communication

  • Working in a multicultural environment

  • Working in interdisciplinary, multi-skill teams

  • Sharing of work tasks on a global and around the clock basis

  • Working in an virtual environment

GEM is a project aiming at creating an international framework for a Master degree curriculum in manufacturing strategy and integrating competence in technology and business. The Curriculum shall reflect the future needs of the manufacturing industry.

The main objectives of GEM are to:

Define and understand the needs of the manufacturing industry for training and education in manufacturing strategy on a global basis to comply with the concept og digital business and extended products.

Develop a framework with detailed specifications for a manufacturing strategy curriculum focusing both manufacturing and business administration topics.

The curriculum will be based on modern pedagogic approaches such as defining cases of extended enterprises and use of multimedia and Internet for delivery. It will allow flexibility to the learner with respect to time and place for delivery of the learning contents.

 

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum covers 7 different areas of knowledge. Each knowledge area contains a number of courses.

 

Framework for curriculum of Master in Manufacturing Strategy

  • Degree will cover a number of knowledge areas

  • Student will select courses from all knowledge areas as well as write a dissertation

  • Within each knowledge area there may be compulsory courses and electives

  • Each course is built from a number subjects, some of which may be compulsory ans some may be elective

  • Each university may make its own implementation of the degree

  • The student is admitted for study at a university that awards the degree

  • The participating universities may exchange courses according to own policy
