Norlight - Heat Treatment

Project challenges

Establish a supercritical research group at NTNU/SINTEF with scientific knowledge, theoretical tools, instrumental facilities and skills to carry out "state of the art" investigations of materials at nano- and microstructural level.

In particular to contribute to further development of the fundamental understanding and quantitative description of reactions and processes during heat treatment of aluminium alloys.

To lay the basis for improved industrial practice and design of "new" materials and improved materials properties in the Norwegian Light Metals Industry.

Key words

Precipitation sequences in industrially important Al-alloy systems

Structure and kinetics in early stages of nucleation

Dispersoid formation and high-temperature recrystallisation resistance

Nucleation of recrystallisation after low deformations

Non-isothermal nucleation and growth of precipitates

Modelling of structures, transformations and properties at atomic and microstructural scale

Advanced electron microscopy (HRTEM, FEG-SEM, FEG-TEM) and other characterisation methods

The project has strong links to the strategic university program (SUP) "Micro- and nanostructure based materials development"
