Maintenance Management
Maintenance Management includes all activities related to the maintenance function and SINTEF is basically using a risk-based approach to Maintenance. Maintenance is defined as the "Combination of all technical and administrative actions, including supervision actions, intended to retain a product in, or restore it to, a state in which it can perform a required function (IEC 60050(191))
Management by objective is an approach where the goal is to manage maintenance activities to fulfil the Maintenance Departments goals. These goals can include reliability, costs and safety. Maintenance activity should reflect the goals defined for the department. Management by objective is often the first step to obtain a cost-effective Maintenance Function.
Risk-Based optimisation will be the next step to develop a cost-effective Maintenance Function. This approach is used when tuning the original goals and to utilise the assets in a cost/benefit approach. Techniques like RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) and RBI (Risk Based Inspection) and other analysis techniques are used for optimisation of maintenance.
Maintenance Organisation Models is an important approach for the department since problems are often related to the organisational models for production and Maintenance. This is often related to differences in prioritizing between production and maintenance departments and in human interaction. The departments have different goals and total risk may increase due to lack of specifications within the PM procedures, Task analysis and so on.
SINTEF have published several articles related to RCM and have developed concepts for RCM and Management by Objectives in cooperation with clients.
