Indicators for monitoring risk
Risk indicators make a simple tool for continuous risk monitoring during operation. SINTEF has co-operated with e.g. the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate in developing a methodology, which identifies the most important risk factors, and establishes risk indicators to measure any change in the risk factors.

In risk exposed enterprises the risk is calculated using quantitative risk analyses. These analyses are usually quite comprehensive and they are updated rather infrequently. Having carried out a risk analysis and thereby established a risk model of the enterprise this model can be utilised as a basis for the identification of the most important risk factors – the factors that are important to follow-up in order to achieve continuous risk control.

The main principles of the SINTEF methodology are simple and applicable to any enterprise or operation. The main focus so far has been on safety risk and risk of large accidents.
