SINTEF Technology and Society is an interdisciplinary research institute within the technical-industrial and social science arena. Our strategy is to build social research into the national technology projects.

In addition to being a strong provider of technology to industry and business, we contribute to solutions to social challenges in health care and welfare, equal employment, a sustainable and competitive business environment, transport and climate and environment.

The esearch Institute has six departments with about 220 employees: Applied Economics, Health Research, Industrial Management, Medical Technology, Safety Research, and Transport Research. Through strategic initiatives and extensive project work we exploit the broad expertise in the departments and in other disciplines within and outside the SINTEF.

Key research areas

Our comprehensive understanding of people, technology, organization, economy and environment provides us with generic competence in manufacturing, service industries and public sectors. At the same time we carry out research, development and advisory services aimed at specific industries such as energy sector, health sector and transport sector. We have extensive international research collaborations, within the EU programs and in the world.

We conduct research and development of technology management in business and public sector. Our research contributes to the increased value including health, safety and environment, in the interaction between technology, people, organizations and society. It is fundamental to our research, that innovation and implementation of new technologies and processes reflect the economic robustness of both industrially and economically.

Technological opportunities and labor shortages have consequences for value creation and the way we organize work and business on. Through our multidisciplinary approach, we contribute to increased value creation in traditional manufacturing and services across industries. In addition, research on innovation is central to contribute to good solutions and increased competitiveness.

Stricter security requirements present challenges in an era where companies need to deliver more complex products and services to increasingly lower cost. We will provide expertise on how risk can be assessed, monitored and managed.

We conduct research on future transportation systems. Our research has a technological point where the goal is that all transport should be safe, efficient and environmentally friendly. A transport system with a minimal consumption of resources is an important overriding consideration. Exploitation of the opportunities of new technology is important in much of our research, both for businesses and government agencies.

Our health research is related to medical technology, health and care services, hospital planning, preventive health care, employment and health and global health challenges. We are key advisers to health authorities in Norway for the health services effects, user benefits and future challenges. We help to realize the great social benefits inherent in preventive health care, and develop technology solutions that improve health, safety and performance in the workplace. We are an active contributor to research on poverty and health in low income countries. Together with research groups within and outside the SINTEF we develop new knowledge that can improve health quality of life for all.
