Formation Physics celebrated 25 years of rock mechanics research
This year marks 25 years from the onset of the first large joint industry project (JIP) on rock mechanics at the former IKU. This project was called Formation Mechanics. It was the original brainchild of a number of key persons: Rolf K. Bratli, Rasmus Risnes, Per Horsrud and Tor Hartvig, the former institute director. Four years and 17 MNOK later the Formation Physics laboratory had been instrumented and established as a state-of-the art laboratory for sand prediction and rock acoustics research. These developments laid down the foundations for the Formation Physics department at SINTEF.

Over 35 former employees and key customers celebrated the 25th anniversary together with the current employees at the Formation Physics. The event was followed by a seminar on the current status of rock mechanics research and the future directions.
