Lightning Detection

The animation on the left side shows the lightning activity in Norway for the year 2004. During the first four months of this year there was only small activities of winter lightning along the cost line. Normally the lightning activity increases during the spring and since the spring came very early in 2004 we registrated around 11 000 strokes during May.

For the year 2004 the alltogether lightning activity was low since the summer turned out to be rather cold for the southern part of Norway (this is where we normally have the highest level of lightning activity). However, the northern part of the country had a very nice summer with temperatures above the average. Higher temperatures and more  humidity in the atmosphere also gave more lightning activity than normal. Particular for the months July and August the activity was high in this region.

Left: In 2004 there was alltogether detected 107458 strokes in Norway.
