Applied superconductivity
Superconductors are new materials introduced to electric power applications. Cooled down to 77 K or below, superconductors can carry more than 100 times the current of a conventional copper conductor and, under DC operation, these currents are conducted loss-free.
The work at SINTEF Energy Research is focused on how these materials can be used in practical applications. We have experience from coil winding, AC losses, cryogenic insulation, and design and building of apparatuses based on superconductors.
Presently we are the coordinator of the EU project ALUHEAT aiming at building an aluminium induction heater based on a novel electromagnetic concept with superconducting coils.
