Precipitation hardening of aluminium alloys
- Beslutningstøtte basert på langsiktig fundamentale markedsanalyser
6xxx alloys provide the automotive industry strong, light-weight
materials that help reduce fuel consumption and gas emissions
in cars.

Alloy design and development is possible only with a
fundamental understanding of the microstructure and its
connection to mechanical properties

The mechanical properties of these age-hardenable alloys are
controlled by nanometre-sized metastable precipitates. Their
crystal structures is being solved, the microstructure resulted
after various heat treatments is quantified, different alloy
compositions are tested and their mechanical strengths are
mapped.

High resolution TEM images of β’, one of the
metastable phases that form in the Al-Mg-Si alloys.

Isothermal hardness curve (150ºC) showing
the macroscopic effect of precipitates.

Image with atomic resolution, position and type
of atoms in the unit cell is also indicated.
