MOPS - Managing Organizational Performance in Ship management

MOPS - Managing Organizational Performance in Ship management

Create a basis for competitive advantage for ship management and ship owning companies through application of performance management methodology and benchmarking by continuously improving their environmental performance, safety standards and operational efficiency.

Performance Management in the Shipping management industry

Performance management in service industries (ship management) is complex as the measurements are not easily obtained, and often relate to specific customer satisfaction requirements. An important contribution to these issues is The Shipping KPI Standard (www.shipping-kpi.com), where transparent and standardized indicators have been developed for the ship management industry. By starting reporting data according to this Standard and applying against industry performance levels will first of all be seen as an organizational development process. Secondly it opens for objective evaluations of strengths and weaknesses in the companies relative to the industry.

Further, it will open for strategic development of the companies to strengthen their market position, and demonstrate how the industry can establish benchmarking as a tool to enhance quality players in a field.

The MOPS project

The MOPS project will use the established set of Shipping KPI indicators as basis for the development of an organizational performance management used for in-house processes while also covering external constrains as defined by contracts, regulations and expectations from the public at large.

The project will address challenges associated with implementing performance management and gaining value from performance measurements. Performance management and use of KPIs are becoming an ever more important part or any organization and is used for internal improvement and communications with external bodies about performance of the organizations

Project partners

The project's consortium will be organized as a user-direct research project with participation from technical ship managers (international and domestic) and the R&D institutions all with complementary and relevant background in terms of professional, operational and academic experience. Odfjell Management AS will be responsible for the project in relation to the Norwegian Research Council, while MARINTEK will take care of the everyday project management.
