Intelligent Transport Systems
Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (ITS) are any ICT system or service that makes the movement of people or goods more efficient, economical and environmental friendly, thus more "intelligent". So far, transport problems have been managed through extensive building of new infrastructure. ITS may, if used in the right way, be an important tool in achieving the goals addressed in the national transport plans.
ITS benefits the society as well as individual stakeholders. Interoperability between stakeholders and systems and across the transport modes (road, sea, rail and air) is of significant importance. The national ITS framework for all transport modes, ARKTRANS, is supporting such a development. SINTEF ICT has managed the work on ARKTRANS, and Norway and SINTEF ICT are in the lead with respect to multimodal and intermodal transport.

SINTEF ICT focus areas
- Management and further development of ARKTRANS, the national ITS framework for all transport modes. The work is based on collaboration with national projects and stakeholder as well as input from European projects. Dissemination and support to those using ARKTRANS are emphasized.
- ITS related projects within all transport modes. The projects are accomplished based on the ARKTRANS specifications.
- Multimodal and intermodal transport solutions for freight and passenger transport.
