SmartPM - Smart Power Management

SmartPM is a research project within the ENIAC - Technology Platform for Nanoelectronics. There are 18 project partners participating and nine different European countries are represented in the consortium.

Today, electronic technologies exist for saving electrical energy consumption. They address the control and conversion of electric power in consumer and industrial appliances. Their potential contribution to the reduction of power consumption is significant: However, the costs of those technologies are yet too high to strongly affect the power consumption numbers.

The SmartPM project contributes significantly to surmount this hurdle. It makes energy saving technologies inexpensive enough to cause a wide market penetration and initiate a significant impact on the overall electric power consumption. Various demonstrators will be implemented addressing among others AC/DC supplies, efficient high-voltage switches, power controls and motor drives. Through this comprehensive set of prototypes the majority of power modules in the electronic consumer arena will be covered thus initiating a significant impact on the overall power consumption in the European Union and worldwide.

The technologies under investigation follow the “More than Moore” path based on Si, SOI and SiC and cover different voltage ranges including low voltage (< 100V), net voltage (120V – 400V) and high voltage (>1000V).
