Background
Patrick Schittekat pursued his PhD as a researcher in Operations Research (OR/MS) at the University of Antwerp, Belgium while also working for ORTEC, one of the largest providers of advanced planning and optimization software solutions and consulting services. This combined position has enabled him to gain a profound insight into the gap between academic theory and practice in OR/MS in general and in vehicle routing in particular. As a software engineer and consultant, Patrick has been involved in a wide range of applied OR/MS projects in different industries (e.g. automotive, postal services, oil and gas). He has lectured Operations Management and Sustainable Logistics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium and equally enjoys giving guest lectures demonstrating the practical relevance and challenges of OR/MS. Patrick Schittekat's current research focus is on the development of self-adapting metaheuristics in a variety of industries, but especially in health care and air traffic management. He is also associate member of the ANT/OR research group at the University of Antwerp, Belgium.
