In 1993 SINTEF initiated a  forum for Maritime Information technology for safe and efficient waterborne transport. The Forum was called Fargis (FAiRway Geografical Informasjon System). The aim was to create a meetingplace  for all actors in this area. The Norwegian Coastal Administration had the chaiman and sponsored the forum together with the Norwegian Research Council.

Fargis Forum acted primarely as a network for R&D actors and user in the area,  and the forum took the initiativ and co-ordinated several national and international projects. For the period 1996 to 2005 a yearly conference was arranged.

After 2005 the forum is formally managed by ITS Norway.  The co-ordination of R&D activity is continued in projects like eFarled (Electronic fairway) and other projects in the MAROFF programme supported by the Norwegian Research Council.
