Water Mist systems in care residences
SINTEF NBL has been performing a project concerning the use of Water Mist systems as life saving system in care residences.
Water Mist systems easily installed in existing care residences/sheltered housings will save lives. By keeping survival conditions at the scene of fire until the rescue team arrives, lives can be saved. Statistics show that 50% of the fatalities in fire are persons more than 60 years old and are often persons with care needs and need of assistance in case of an evacuation situation. Due to lack of design requirements for water mist systems, these have been compared to a residential sprinkler system. A total of 40 tests have been carried out, on one sprinkler installation and five different water mist installations.
The project is performed on behalf of Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning (DSB).
The report (NBL A06108) from this project is published in Norwegian on our website under “Publications”.
