Important research projects to increase fire safety
At present SINTEF NBL is working on several projects of huge importance for ordinary people. These are projects funded by the Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning (DSB) and are focusing on what to do to increase the fire safety in Norway.

Among several others there are two worth mentioning, the combustibility of electrical components and equipment, and the assessment of requirements to mattresses and furniture in various ranges of use. The projects will be completed within this year.

More than 40% of all fires in Norway, breaks out in electrical installations. Compared with other countries in Scandinavia this is a high number. It is of great importance to find the cause. SINTEF NBL looks into the Norwegian test methods, to find out whether the tests are satisfactory, and perform laboratory tests to increase the knowledge about the weaknesses of the materials used in today's eletrical equipment.

In Norwegian homes, institutions and other public buildings you will find lots of mattresses and furniture. Today's Norwegian requirements to mattresses and furniture are satisfied, but it is a question whether the requirements are good enough. SINTEF NBL investigates this, and also whether the safety level should be differentiated for different ranges of use.
