Geological Engineering Laboratory
Drillability testing including determination of DRITM, BWITM, CLITM, Cerhar Abrasivity Index (CAI) and Ball Mill Value are the main activities at the Geological Engineering Laboratory. Test results from nearly 3000 samples are catalogued and form the basis of the drillability database.
New test methods intended for optimisation of TBM cutter life are currently under development in co-operation with Department of Civil and Transport Engineering at NTNU.
The laboratory also performs a range of common analysis intended for determination of mineralogy and classification of rock material, and swelling properties of gauge material.
As a part of the activities of the Gemini Centre in Underground Technology the laboratory has established Drillability.com which is a forum for discussions about drillability and further development and research in the field.
Need for drillability investigations?
The Geological Engineering Laboratory possesses the essential equipment and qualifications in order to perform drillability testing including determination of DRITM, BWITM, CLITM, Cerhar Abrasivity Index CAI and Ball Mill Value.
The Indices are indirect measures for the drillability of rocks, and present important factors in connection with all kinds of rock excavation and tunnelling works.
