A number of courses in partial differential equations and numerical methods are give at the Norwegian universities. Through the set of winter schools we wish to develop a supplementary forum for dissemination of modern theory and computational methods to students and researchers. The winter schools will be given on a national basis, and will therefore contribute to a broader contact between students at the different universities and researchers in the institutes and the industry. The winter schools are also open to participants from outside Norway.
Focus for the winter schools will be on:
- Computations and visualization on modern hardware, with special emphasis on parallel architectures.
- Efficient computational methods with emphasis on numerical and mathematical properties
- Implementation based on modern programming methods and languages (with emphasis on object orientation)
- Specific mathematical models and their properties
- Modern mathematical theory for partial differential equations
Speakers and curriculum for the winter schools are choosen by a project group with people from Norwegian universities and research institutes.
The following group is responsible for the scientific direction of the winter schools:
- Knut-Andreas Lie, senior scientist, SINTEF Applied Mathematics, Department of Numerical Simulation. Project leader for the winter schools.
- Aslak Tveito, managing director, Simula Research Laboratory / professor, Department of Informatics, University of Oslo
- Bjørn Fredrik Nielsen, associate professor, Simula Research Laboratory
- Helge Holden, professor, Department of Mathematical Sciences, NTNU
- Kenneth Hvistendahl Karlsen, professor, Department of Mathematics, University of Oslo
- Tor Sørevik, professor, Department of Informatics, University of Bergen
- Helge K. Dahle, professor, Department of Mathematics, University of Bergen.
Daily programme
Typically, each day will look as follows:
08:00-09:00 Breakfast 09:00-10:30 Lectures 10:30-14:00 Leisure activities (skiing..) 15:00-18:30 Lectures 19:00- Dinner Alltogether the lecture series will consist of 30 lectures.
Exam
For those who need credits for a university curriculum, a voluntary exam is organised by the Department of Informatics at the University of Oslo. The formate of this exam will vary with the topic; the exam will either be a practical assignment (programming) or a theoretical assignment in the form of an essay.
