Materials for wind energy

Wind turbines and their components are subjected to large long lasting loads and harsh environment resulting in high demands to the applied structural materials and protective coatings used. SINTEF Materials and Chemistry works on development, testing and modelling of a wide range of materials applied in wind turbines.

This includes among others:

  • Composites for turbine blades
  • Coating for erosion protection of blades and corrosion protection of substructures
  • High quality casted iron for use in turbine hubs

In addition our expertise on materials and material mechanics is applied towards topics as maintenance, damage assessment and structural health monitoring.
