SINTEF Petroleum Research Improved Recovery
About half of the oil in known North Sea fields has been produced and finding more is becoming increasingly difficult. A good alternative is to find means of extracting the remaining known oil, i.e. Enhanced Oil Recovery. SINTEF's research in this direction involves lab experiments and simulation of the use of low saline water, polymers, surfactants, CO2, microbes and nanotechnology.
The Reservoir laboratory provides methods and equipment for performing experiments at reservoir and production conditions.
Advances in sand production quantification
Many of the oil and gas reservoirs are found in weakly consolidated sandstone formations. During production sand grains might be loosened from the formation and follow the hydrocarbons.
Shale Rock Physics
Improved quantitative interpretation of seismic 4D and exploration data from stress and temperature dependent wave velocities in shales along relevant in situ stress paths.
Lab results could improve offshore production economics
Norwegian laboratory tests show that gas wells can continue to be productive longer than we predicted, before they need expensive “anti-ageing” support.
