Semantic technologies

Semantic technologies enable an explicit representation of the semantics (meaning) of data. These technologies allow for defining the meaning of entities residing in a domain (e.g. by means of ontologies), representing and storing the entities according to such definition (e.g. by means of RDF) and capture meaningful information (e.g. by means of SPARQL) related to the entities once they are stored.

Semantic technologies offer improved integration and interoperability of diverse information systems and operate on top of existing systems infrastructure. Hence, integration and coordination of heterogeneous systems can be accomplished without costly and labour intensive modification of the underlying ICT systems infrastructure.

SINTEF do research on how semantic technologies can help establish (semantic) interoperability between different information systems in order to ensure systems-of-systems collaboration and coordination required for the realization of smart cities.

Furthermore, as private and public organizations share their data (open data), SINTEF do research on how semantic technologies can help conceptualize and interlink the data and translate them into information that can be applied by machines as well as humans.
