Oil spill identification - OSINET - Round Robin 2012

Abstract

The 7th Oil Spill Identification Round Robin within the Bonn Agreement Oil Spill Identification Network of Experts (OSINET) has been organized by Fugro ERT, Edinburgh. SINTEF received six oil samples (3 spill samples and 3 suspected sources) and has followed instructions (Ad_1) given by the organizers for analysis and data treatment. The source samples were from platforms offshore Nigeria, and are therefore crude oils, although the GC/MS analysis indicated that some specific features for refined product were present. As the same features were present in the spill sample, it was assumed that they were crudes too. The following conclusions are suggested: • Spill 1 has positive match to source 1, and non-match to source 2 and source 3.• Spill 2 has positive match to source 1, and non-match to source 2 and source 3.• Spill 3 has non-match to source 1, source 2, and source3.• The source samples are different from each other• Spill 1 has positive match to spill 2• Spill 3 has non-match to spill 1 and spill 2.
