Offshore platforms, the railway and process plants onshore are examples of systems where safety is of high importance. Because of this, they are equipped with safety systems to prevent harm on people, environment or property. These can be instrumented systems or administrative tools, as for example procedures on what to do when deviations from normal operation occur.

Primarily, we work with the instrumented safety systems. These include systems that automatically detect, alarm and handle critical situations. In oil and gas industry, there are several instrumented safety systems:

  • Emergency shutdown (ESD)
  • Process shutdown (PSD)
  • Fire and gas systems (F&G)
  • Over pressure protection (HIPPS, OPS)

Systems used today are based on long traditions and knowledge acquired through several decades. New operational modes, as integrated operations, mean new technology, increased complexity and new ways of interaction. This also means new requirements for the instrumented safety systems, a challenge we meet in several projects for the industry.
