Over the past years, researchers at the Faculty of Medicine at NTNU have conducted measurements of neck movements from patients with a neck injury of some sort. This measurement setup enables a quantitative analysis of functional properties and characteristics of the neck movements by these patients. Diagnostics of neck injuries based on quantitative analyses is an immature field of research where many questions still remain.

The measurements are conducted by mounting a magnetic field sensor in the forehead of the patient. By setting up a magnetic field around the patient, the position and orientation of the head (and thereby the neck movements) may be measured.

SINTEF was engaged in order to develop software based on MATLAB for analysing and visualizing these data. The work on this software is an on-going activity. A screenshot from the developed software is shown below.
