Experience data

The term "experience data" refers to all information and knowledge about historic events and processes that can be described through quantitative data, structured information and/or qualitative descriptions.

One of SINTEF's main projects within this area is the OREDA Project (Offshore Reliability Data). This project has run continuously since the 1980s. It consists of collection and analysis of large amounts of data about offshore equipment failure, both topside and subsea. SINTEF has also collected and analysed similar within helicopter transport, oil and gas blowouts, downhole safety valves and well completion equipment. More recent projects include new methods for analysis such as data mining and case based reasoning.

Our researchers cover a wide variety of disciplines, but the common denominator of all our employees is top competence on the assessment, monitoring and management of risk.

  • We develop models, methods, databases, and standards for proactive management of safety and reliability.
  • We develop theoretical perspectives improving our understanding of how safety is created and recreated.
  • Our employees are educated within engineering disciplines, mathematical statistics, epidemiology as well as social and organisational science.
  • Our most important customers are within industry (offshore and onshore), transport and the public sector.
