A safer and greener transportation system is urgently needed. Further development of conventional technology will play a role in achieving this, but to reach the ultimate goals of zero accidents and full decarbonisation, new and revolutionary technologies are needed. More automated operation is one of the most promising candidates here. In addition to accidents reduction, increased automation represents a major technology leap that is necessary to remodel the existing transportation systems and shift transport to more energy efficient modes. There is thus every reason to believe that the smart, green and sustainable transportation system will be characterized by a high level of automation.

SATS is an interdisciplinary initiative by SINTEF which will address the challenges and opportunities of automated transportation system by land and sea. By combining SINTEF's unique expertise in all modes of transportation, as well as the expertise in research collaboration between technology know-how and knowledge of the application of technology, SINTEF will advance toward developing/actualize/realizing/implementing the transportation system of the future.

The initiative is a collaboration between several of SINTEF's institutes and is based on competence on all modes of transportation and solutions for connected automated transportation chains. The challenges of future automated transportation systems are of both technical, social and regulatory nature, and interdisciplinary research is essential for ensuring a success development and implementation.

Currently, these Institutes at SINTEF are participate in the initiative:
